The Environment Working Group or EWG for short, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that is trying to protecting our health and the environment. Their goal is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. They have a team of scientists, policy experts, lawyers, and programmers who investigate and research on toxins, environmental health, food & agriculture, and water & energy. They want to make sure someone is standing up for public health when government or industry will not.
EWG was co-founded by Ken Cook 20 years ago. He is a big influencer on many of our farm bills by drawing attention to the use of pesticides, cleanliness of our drinking water, and the sustainability practices of our farmers. He has also been a big advocate in pushing the labeling of the genetically engineered ingredients in our food.
The Skin Deep Mobile App is definitely a must when shopping for beauty products. This sucker will tell you all about those chemicals in your beauty products. Just scan or type the product in and this app will rate the item on a scale from 0-10, with 10 being the worst. It is truly amazing what you will find!
When I began to swap out my beauty products I did so little by little, not a major overhaul. Once you are out of an item then go to the store and see what ingredients are in your current product. It might not be so bad, but if it is, then try to find something with a better rating. For instance, if you see that your mascara is a 9, then type in mascaras, and sort by the “best”. Hopefully you will find one that works for you.
I use E.L.F. mascara ($3 and available at Target) which is rated a 3. Not bad as I try to stay at a 3 or below, but my goal is always a 0. Once I am out of this mascara I am going to do some research to see what will be a little healthier.
Just remember that you use many of these beauty items everyday and sometimes multiple times a day, so why not make it safe?
