Bulletproof Coffee – WTF is the Big Deal?

March 6, 2016

The other day I was on Instagram and saw that Jessica Biel could not live without her Bulletproof coffee. Later that same day I was reading in my Thrive magazine (yes, it was from the Holidays) about the amazing uses for coconut oil including, yes….Bulletproof coffee. Coincidence? I think not!

So, of course I had to find out what the big deal was. If this was a new craze, I had to try it. I have to be in the know at least.

So, I did some research about MCT, coconut oil, etc. I quickly came to the conclusion that:

A) I would use coconut oil since it is all natural (MCT is man-made)
B) Anything to give me more energy while using natural ingredients….sign me the heck up!
C) You can also lose weight. Bonus! Since moving to Chicago, I have eaten my way through half the damn restaurants in this town, so it would not hurt to lose a few lbs.

I then knew I was not going to buy the stuff, only because I am cheap and will find a way to make the crap on my own.

I also wanted to make sure that I tried this stuff out for a while before I told my audience to try this. I wanted to make sure it did not make one crazy, psycho, or want to hurt others.

So, here is what I have learned, determined, and my modified recipe is below.

Easy Homemade Butter

April 30, 2015

I am always on a mission to make my own food when I can. I like to do everything myself, can’t you tell?!

Most of the time, making your own food is cheaper and does not take up too much time. Money and time are the two key factors in making most of my decisions. I need more or have to save more!

If I do know that a product does not cost much more to buy, the ingredients are minimal and healthy, and it will save me time….then I will get that sucker any day!

Unfortunately, to buy healthy products usually tends to be more costly and honestly, rightfully so. These are usually high quality products that involve a lot of love and labor.

Not too long ago I was on a quest to make my own butter and stumbled upon this recipe (I google things a lot)….We (ok my husband) tweaked it a bit to really make it easier.

This butter not only tastes great, but there are no additives or preservatives. Only one ingredient and I feel like it lasts us forever! Continue Reading…

Remove these foods from your diet to start living longer…..

March 9, 2015

So, as many of you know our family has started on an awesome new way of eating. If you have not had the chance to read Better Health in 120 Days: Finding Answers with the WEE Protocol for a Genomic-Specific Nutritional Plan you must! It is a small book that will change the way you think of food and your health!

We started the plan in December and feel great, look better, sleep better, and have saved money at the grocery store to boot! I will be posting some great tips from the book and the WEE Protocol itself. I will follow-up with a large post on breaking it down and how we did it in the next few months. So stay tuned.

For now here are the Omega 6 Plant Oil Foods that we should remove from our diet or limit significantly. They can lead to omega-6 inflammation and cancers.

  • seeds
  • nuts
  • flax
  • soy
  • granola
  • trail mix
  • humus
  • farm fed fish and poultry
  • Plant & Cooking Oils
    • Nut and seed oils, canola, soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, coconut oils
  • Shortening
  • Chips

It is not easy by any means and you have to start little by little, one by one. We need to balance our Omega 6 with our Omega 3. Increase your fish oil intake and lessen the Omega 6 in your diet. There is just way to much of that in our Western diet.

Nuts, seeds, flax, granola and trail mix can be expensive. Instead of humus make a bean dip.

Buy wild fish and organic poultry

Use butter and make you own potato or tortilla chips with butter

Easy fixes

Stay tuned for some recipes and more tips from the #WEEProtocol

***This is a protocol that my family is personally following. I am not a doctor and don’t intend to be.  I would recommend consulting with your physician first. Common sense stuff. If you are interested in the protocol definitely read the book and reach out to Dr Auckerman 🙂

Blue Apron Giveaway……Think Yummy Food!

March 6, 2015

Last year my girlfriend sent me three free meals from Blue Apron. At first, I thought it was actually a scam and deleted the emails. Then I finally realized that it was truly legitimate!

For only $59.99 you can order 3 meals, for two people, a week. That comes out to $10 a person. I did not mind the price since that would feed our family of four (2 kiddos under 3 at the time). Our boys are actually eating a bit more now so we might have to upgrade soon. 🙂

The next size up is the new family plan. This is supposed to appeal to parents and kiddos for only $8.74 a person! You can get 2 planned meals for only $69.92. This is going to be next on the list for us.

If you are busy (like the rest of the world) this is a great service to utilize. They do all the work for you – shopping, sourcing, planning, recipes, etc. They even deliver it to your door on the day you choose! You can’t get much fresher than that!

The recipe card is colorful and easy to read. The ingredients are wrapped up individually and labeled. This not only helps to reduce waste but saves time! Plus, there are fun, speciality ingredients that you would not normally buy yourself. Continue Reading…
